Assamualaikum means death or harm be to you. So the Prophet would answer Walaikum, or same to you. Also, sometimes today, a nonMuslim might greet you ina MOCKING way with salaam, so that is why we say walaikum. I'm not sure how authentic this info is, but look into it insha Allah.
